Outer Banks Area Features

North Duck Watersports & Nags Head Watersports

  By: Leah Lancione

When Drew Meredith graduated from high school, he left Virginia Beach, VA for the Outer Banks to join his family in the watersports industry. Partnering with his father, Andrew Meredith Sr., he opened North Duck Watersports in 1991 and Nags Head Watersports just five years later. Thanks to growing up by the beach and inheriting a passion for watersports, his enthusiasm permeates the business. “I just want people to have a fun experience,” admits Drew. He knows families come to the Outer Banks to encounter all it has to offer—excitement, adventure, and relaxation in a picturesque setting.

Both North Duck Watersports and Nags Head Watersports offer something for everyone. As the North Duck location boasts an acre of property—including its own sound-side marina—it is the largest watersports facility in Duck, if not in the entire Outer Banks. Drew reveals, “Everything was destroyed by Hurricane Irene in 2011, so we had to completely rebuild everything. As a result, it’s better than ever; a new facility with all the improvements we wanted and the best selection of equipment.” With jet skis, pontoon boats, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) for rent, as well as parasailing, the prospects for fun are limitless.

“We’re very family-oriented,” says Drew, explaining that folks could easily spend a whole day on the premises. “Our Duck location has a large shaded area with picnic tables and couches so there’s plenty of room for people to hang out and relax between excursions on the water. Our sunset cruises are very popular too! People love watching the beautiful sunset from a pontoon boat.” He acknowledges the family atmosphere also draws a lot of family reunions. And, North Duck and Nags Head Watersports can not only meet but exceed expectations for individuals of all skill levels and predispositions.

With 1-, 2-, and 3-person jet skis rentals available, as well as parasailing opportunities from 500, 900 and even 1,200 feet up, adrenaline junkies can find the rush they seek! If relaxing and soaking up some sunshine or leisurely fishing is more your style, a two- or four-hour jaunt on a 24-foot pontoon boat will do the trick. And for those who like to mix sightseeing with a little physical fitness, taking a kayak or SUP out in the scenic sound will fulfill both ambitions.

Drew says his friendly and accommodating staff ensures that visitors are set up for a fun and safe time on the water. He asserts, “For all our rentals, we offer some pretty specific instructions since safety comes first.” Describing the hands-on approach, Drew says he or other staffers get into the water to teach first-timers how to get up on an SUP. For each watersport, there’s a protocol for teaching customers how to maneuver the equipment. An avid surfer himself, Drew knows full well that once visitors to the Outer Banks get a taste of being on the water—no matter the watercraft—there’s a good chance they’ll be hooked for life and make unforgettable memories.
