Turf’s Up OBX

  By: Leah Lancione

Imagine a place where you can tee off at Pebble Beach, Pinehurst No. 2, Torrey Pines or another premier golf course, hit a home run, throw a touchdown, score a goal, kick a field goal on an aircraft carrier, and so much more. Sound too good to be true? Well, thanks to state-of-the-art, custom-designed, high-definition sports simulation technology at Turf’s Up OBX, these fantasy scenarios can be a reality.

A sports-lover and gamer’s paradise, Turf’s Up opened its doors in Kitty Hawk on June 27, 2017. Owners Ash and Kellie Jones wanted to offer folks a completely different interactive venue that provides indoor entertainment for all ages, as well as opportunities for locals to participate in golf leagues or take classes or private lessons led by in-house professionals.

A former pro and instructor himself, Ash says he drew from his 15 years’ experience in the golf industry and his knowledge of the remarkable advances in sports simulation technology to conceive of the concept for Turf’s Up. Fueled by Ash’s entrepreneurial spirit, Turf’s Up is a one-of-a-kind establishment that has experienced instant success and support from the community.

Turf’s Up just completed its inaugural Baseball Academy for kids (ages 8-12), which was such a "hit" that it will be offered again this summer as well as for an extended session November through March. Ash admits he knew it would be a success thanks to a talented staff that includes former professional baseball player Corey Martin and former Division 1 collegiate player Sean Darsee. Two times a week for four weeks, youngsters received instruction from “coaches who know baseball inside and out,” Ash says.

For golfers wishing to enhance their swing, Turf’s Up offers lessons with high-speed video analysis—a virtual “MRI for your golf swing,” admits Ash. With 600 frames per second, the result is an in-depth stroke analysis of club speed, path, face, face-to-face path, ball speed, launch, spin, etc. “Golfers can instantly see the areas where they can improve, and it’s also incredible from a club-fitting standpoint.
Turf’s Up is also the perfect place for a party or event. “We’ve hosted fantasy football drafts, birthday parties, Christmas parties, recreation league trophy ceremonies, corporate events and more,” says Ash.

For out-of-towners visiting the Outer Banks, Turf’s Up is a must-experience. With four simulator bays, touch-screen monitors and an impressive catalogue of game options—from golf (96 courses and a driving range), baseball, soccer, football, basketball and hockey to zombie dodgeball, bocce and other carnival-style games—there’s something for everyone no matter their age or skill level! “We’ve even had kids come in and hook up their X-boxes to play their favorite games on the big screen using our expert audio/visual technology,” laughs Ash.

As an added perk, Turf’s Up has a snack and beverage bar with beer, sodas and light snacks, but also allows patrons to bring in their own food. Ash acknowledges, “We’re neighbors to a lot of great restaurants, so we invite people to order in or bring in takeout.” He confesses that being within walking distance of some popular restaurants means folks can pop in to kill some time while waiting for their table to be ready. “Why not pass the time doing something exciting for the whole family? Couples can have some fun alone time on one bay or just enjoy a beverage and conversation while their kids are happily preoccupied on another! It’s a win-win for everyone!” says Ash.

Ash admits he’s received the stamp of approval not only from the community, but from his own kids too, who love hanging out at Turf’s Up and will “one day join in the family business.”

Located at 3712 N. Croatan Hwy, Turf’s Up OBX is open year-round, Tuesday-Sunday. For hours or to book a time slot, call 252-715-5820 or email info@turfsupobx.com. Turf’s Up also welcomes walk-ins. For more information you can also visit Turf’s Up OBX on Facebook.
