Outer Banks Area Features

Sooey’s & Simply Southern

  By: Leah Lancione

If you live in or are visiting the Outer Banks and want to experience authentic, mouthwatering Southern cooking, you need not look any further than Sooey’s BBQ & Rib Shack or Simply Southern Kitchen. Both restaurants are family owned and operated by Beaman Hines Sr.

In 2002, when Hines first opened Sooey’s BBQ in Nags Head, he had already cultivated his pig-picking, cook-out style of cuisine and wanted to share it with locals and tourists. Due to continued popularity, he opened a second Sooey’s in Corolla in 2004 and a third in Duck in 2006.

“We’ve received several awards in our 15 years of business,” says Hines, who attributes success to fine-tuned family recipes for pulled pork, ribs, beef brisket, chicken, seafood, and more. He reveals that the goal is to present “a great product for a fair price.” Sooey’s is famous for its hickory-smoked BBQ and Carolina sauce crafted with 17 different spices. The Nags Head location also boasts a new upper deck where folks can dine and take in a breathtaking view of the ocean and Jockey’s Ridge.

“My family goes back hundreds of years here,” says Hines, who grew up in Stumpy Point, NC where his grandparents owned Hooper and Son Grocery and Grill. As a result of being raised in that environment, he’s created restaurants that folks return to year after year. “It’s gratifying to know that some of the youngsters who came here when I first started are now coming back with their own kids.”

A true family legacy, Hines’ son, daughter, nieces and nephews participate in the business as well. Hines also credits his loyal staff as part of the winning equation.

Hines opened Simply Southern Kitchen in 2015 because he wanted to impart his “Nanny’s recipes” and to pay homage to the restaurant his aunt owned in the 1980s—Pots On ‘N’ Kitchen. Taking a cue from that popular eatery, Simply Southern Kitchen presents home-cooked comfort food like fried chicken, Salisbury steak, beef brisket, hush puppies, and more. The restaurant has already won three awards in two years.

Hines also plans to open a produce and seafood stand next to Simply Southern Kitchen. He notes that much of the fresh produce for his restaurants comes from his father’s garden, and seafood is provided by family members who are local fishermen.

Both Sooey’s and Simply Southern Kitchen provide full-service or pick-up and drop-off catering for any event.
This February Hines opened Sandtrap Tavern OBX, which overlooks the first fairway of the Sea Scape Golf Links in Kitty Hawk. “It’s a little different from my other restaurants but with the same southern flair,” says Hines. Here, folks will still find his signature homegrown specialties but also lighter fare, a vast selection of spirits, and breakfast served daily. The Tavern features music and can be rented out for weddings and other events.
