Outer Banks Area Features

Duck & Southern Shores, NC

The towns of Duck and Southern Shores are some of the best family-oriented beach towns in the nation. They’re great places to relax and unwind in the beautiful houses that line the wide beaches both on the Atlantic Ocean and the Currituck Sound. Part of the charm of these towns comes from the fact that they have remained predominately residential communities with beach access limited to those who are staying at a neighborhood property, not the general public. The beaches are the star attraction and vacationers here will undoubtedly find them spacious, clean, and great for family members young and old.

Stroll the Duck Boardwalk

Anyone who visits the Outer Banks will undoubtedly want to visit the Duck Town Park Boardwalk. It’s a mile-long stretch of wooden planks that span the calm waters of the Sound. Boutique shops and independent restaurants serving local cuisine can be spotted along the way. Many visitors find that the boardwalk is a romantic place to catch an amazing sunset or glimpse wildlife including wading birds, snapping turtles and fish feeding just below the surface of the water. Cast in a fishing line to see if something bites! Perhaps bring a picnic lunch and sit at one of the tables along the path while the waves lap below you. After your walk, take in a free concert or performance at the nearby amphitheater.

Take a Guided Kayak Tour

A wonderful way to start your day in this area is to take a guided kayak tour throughout the natural setting of the Currituck Sound. As you paddle around the calm waters, learn about the animals that make the surrounding land their home and the creatures that swim beneath your kayak. Those looking for a more challenging experience can try kayaking in the ocean. Keep an eye out for the chance to see dolphins. They may be swimming nearby and are always fun to watch.

Pamper Yourself

After a full day of shopping and fun on the water, why not take some time to get pampered? Within Duck and Southern Shores are a number of spas that offer rejuvenating services including massages, facials, and hair and nail care. Relax and let your stress melt away and maybe come away with a new look. It’s definitely recommended that every vacationer partake of a soothing therapeutic spa session to truly unwind while away from the daily grind.

Browse the Local Shops

Known throughout the Outer Banks are the distinctive and sometimes eccentric stores at the Scarborough Faire Shopping District and Scarborough Lane Shoppes. Once you enter these shopping areas, you’ll see items of every variety in the storefront windows. With an array of unique stores and restaurants, everyone in the family, even the pets, will undoubtedly find a something they’ll love. And as you walk along the Boardwalk in Duck, you’ll find another favorite shopping area, the Waterfront Shops—which offer a fantastic assortment of boutique stores, a favorite restaurant, and places to grab an ice cream cone or a cup of coffee.
